Sections
of the Department
Our
police department is divided in the following parts. Each part
is important in making our department successful.
Administration
Operations Division - Patrol
Criminal Investigation Section - Detective
Bureau
Services Division - Community Policing
|
|
Administration |
|
|
Our
Administration is currently made up of five officers. The Chief,
who is the head law enforcement officer of the Township, is responsible
for the police department as a whole. He also is a liaison between
the police and Township Committee. The Captain is second in command
of the department. The Lieutenants are in charge of several parts
of the department.

|
Patrol |
|
|
Patrol
is the biggest section and backbone of the police department.
The officers in this part of the department patrol during their
12 hour shifts. Patrol is conducted 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. These officers usually have the first contact with citizens
of our Township. Some of their responsibilities include:
- Motor
Vehicle Accidents
- Domestic
Violence Situations
- Traffic
Citations and Problems
- Initial
Investigations
- Referrals
to Other Agencies
This
is just a small part of what a patrol officer does. The patrol
officer can refer a case to the administration, detective bureau
or community policing unit if necessary. A patrol officer must
be ready for anything at any time. He/she never knows what to
expect during the shift.

Detective
Bureau |
|
|
Detectives
are the support staff of our police department. They have many
responsibilities which include:
- Follow-up
Investigations
- Identification
Work
- Background
Investigations
- Evidence
- Crime
Scenes
- Firearms
- Fingerprinting
**
A
detective works during the day or evening hours, but one the
the detectives remain on call at all times. This detective may
have to respond to
a crime scene at any time. Detectives are sent to several police
schools to train.
**Note:
Fingerprinting is done on the third Thursday of the month from
6:00 pm to 9:00 pm or by appointment with our Detective Bureau.
This is open to all township residents.

Community
Policing |
|
|
Our Community
Policing section of the department is involved with several activities.
- Community
Policing - Our community policing unit does programs that include
child ID programs, personal safety seminars, drug awareness programs,
Junior Police Academy and the Bike Helmet Safety Program. The
unit works with homeowners associations and local business.
- ESU -
The Emergency Services Unit supplements patrol and handles rescue
squad calls. ESU personnel are trained EMT's. This enables a
quick response for life threatening situations.
- Traffic
- Our Traffic officer is responsible for new roads and road improvement.
He works with the planning board and other associations to provide
safe roads in Raritan Township.
- D.A.R.E. - (Drug Abuse
Resistance Education) is taught in 5th grade by our
D.A.R.E. Officer. He also visits Kindergarten through 4th
grade classes and preschools in the Raritan Township area.
