The mission of the Township of Raritan, Department of Fire Safety is to prevent and minimize the loss of life and property of the community residents and businesses through the delivery of the highest quality of efficient and effective code enforcement, public education and emergency response.
Our primary responsibility is enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and other local fire safety regulations. Major activities within the scope of this office include: Life hazard and Non-Life Hazard Inspections, Complaints, Permit Control, Smoke Detector Inspections on re-sale, Violation and Penalty Notices for failure to comply with the law. We also conduct Fire Safety Presentations for Schools, businesses, and other community groups; control of false alarms and fire zones and fire investigations to determine origin and cause.
We inspect all Life and Non-Life Hazard business structures and operations throughout the Township at least once every 12 months, and certain inspections are conducted every 3 months. Allegations of fire safety violations are frequently received and usually result in spot inspections within a few hours.
